The history of Chrome Oxide Greens

Chrome Oxide Green was described by Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin in 1809. It was first used in the ceramics industry, but was not used as a paint coloring pigment until 1892. Some evidence points to its industrial preparation around 1860 and although there is evidence of its prior use, it was more likely in the form of chrome hydroxide. The pigment is prepared by calcinating potassium dichromate together with reducing agents and the raw product is washed until all soluble matter is completely eliminated, then it is dried and finely ground.
